Flashing: Thin pieces of metal installed around roof penetrations like chimneys and vents, and at roof valleys, to direct water away from vulnerable seams and prevent leaks.
Drip edge: A metal strip along the roof's edges that channels water away from the fascia and into the gutters, protecting the roof's edge and the home's structure from water damage.
Ridge cap: The shingles or material installed along the peak of the roof, finishing the roofline and providing extra protection at one of the roof's most exposed points.
Valley: The angled junction where two roof slopes meet. This area channels significant water flow and needs careful flashing and installation to prevent leaks.
Soffit and fascia: The soffit covers the underside of the roof's overhang, while the fascia is the trim board along the roof's lower edge. Both play a role in ventilation and protecting the roof structure.
