Usually, when the panels are sound. Most metal roof leaks come from loose or worn fasteners, failed seams, or flashing at penetrations and transitions, and those can be repaired. Where rust or minor leaks are spread across the roof, a coating system can restore a metal roof that is still structurally sound. Replacement makes sense when panels are badly corroded or the roof has outlived its design.
Standing seam panels attach with hidden clips and raised seams, which lets the metal expand and contract with heat and keeps screws out of the weather. Exposed fastener panels are screwed through the face of the panel. They cost less up front, but the fasteners and washers need checking and replacing over time.
